My work frequently shifted between objects of focus, but often focused on scenarios featuring a lack of people. My work is often about what things would be like if people weren’t around, or how people feel when they are by themselves. During my junior year, I definitely believe I focused on objects themselves. The artworks are meant to bring a nostalgic feeling, or a feeling of melancholy. Using paint, I had also focused on works that focused as a sort of impression of objects. I had specifically done works like this to focus on the idea of perspective. A lot of people see things differently, and a lot of people change things by choice over what they see. These things can have various interpretations or can be used to bring out certain emotions. This aspect is something that I wanted to cover, especially with my photography and my painting based on said photography. My usage of saturation in the photo was an attempt to make something that feels nostalgic, while the painting was an attempt to make the viewers feel like they were in a flowing motion. These artworks focused on emotion rather than a direct meaning.
My Self Portrait was one of my most challenging works. It was difficult to manage both my time and my resources during this process. I often found myself not making enough of a color of paint, which required me to blend more. This would often result in color changes across the work as well as some portions of the work using more paint than others. These offsets often made it difficult to apply techniques for the artwork. This project served as a sort of wake-up call for me. Following senior year, I would focus more on managing myself as well as my techniques.
Then for my senior year, I had heavily focused on painting for the first three projects. These paintings mostly focused on aspects that did not involve people, and rather something that would occur without them. To be more precise, these works focused on the passing of time, and how things can break and wither as it passes. The first paintings resemble the passing of time breaking things down, featuring several parts of the day, including a storm. The second group of paintings focused on the transitions of time. The third group of paintings focused on a metaphor of time locking away opportunities for others, specifically things that are available or are easier to perform in the day rather than the night.
My last project featured an illustration; something significantly different than what I have made in this semester. This was a test to myself to see how I would be able to perform with my improvements to color and movement with my previous artworks. It was also a test to see whether I would be able to implement these skills into a different medium. This proved to be true to an extent, but it is not as clear as if I were to practice in illustration entirely. This artwork focused on time as well, particularly how things can break in a single day. As for how this project helped me develop on a technical level, I learned that techniques applied on different mediums are sometimes effective despite the different tools used. Not all techniques are shared between mediums though, and some mediums are more difficult to replicate the technique on than others.
