Artist Inspiration
My artist inspiration for this project is called "Faces Serie 2 Painting" by Raúl Lara. The most interesting thing I find about this artwork is the two subjects used in the photo. With two references, the artist seemingly fused them together into one scenario. I wanted to try and replicate something similar to that for this new still life. I wanted to take two scenarios and combine them into one, forming a partially abstract piece. |
Planning Sketches
For this decoration, I initially started by drawing the shadow of the statue. Then I progressively worked on the outline of the object before adding details to the interior, such as stripes, eyes, and even some changes in the material of the statue. To keep it short, I used vague strokes of charcoal in order to resemble the shadow of the statue. I also tried to draw the face based on the angle that I looked at it at, which succeeded to some extent.

For this decoration, I also started by drawing the shadow of the object, similar to the last one. After that, I also began to draw the exterior of the object. The difference between this sketch and the last one is that size is a notable part of it. Exaggerated proportions are much more clear than that of the statue, making it a much more notable change.

Process and Experimentation
References
To start this project I began by making the outline first rather than the shadows of the objects. This makes it easier to size how large the shadows themselves should be rather than making an estimate initially and then having to work with what was made. I combined the two images together by making it look as though a book was stacked on top, combining the two pictures together.
After that had been completed, I began working on the interior details of the objects. I started by adding some of the labels to the books to give it some detail, and also included some shading on different areas of the book in order to resemble color. After that, I also attempted to shade the outline of the objects, so that the objects themselves appear more clearly apart from the added shading. The cut off side of the elephant statue serves as an additional representation of my theme. Separating how myths have been interpreted in literature.

Reflection
For this project, I believe the most difficult challenge that was presented was determining the accurate proportions of the objects in the still life. This was a similar issue back in my original still life in my first semester. I attempted to change this issue by drawing in a different order, but it had little affect. I could likely attempt to solve this issue by sketching using accurate measurements prior to any actual detail being planted into the still life. While this would take considerably more time and have to be scaled based on the size of the paper, it would likely still pan out a much more accurately sized scenario. However, in terms of developing a theme, I feel as though this project presented it considerably more clearly than that of my first semester work.
Compare and Contrast
Compare
- Both artworks attempt to fuse two subjects into one
- Both seem to have considerably reliance on shading to present the picture.
- Both artworks seem to be similar to a comparison between the two subjects rather than a complete fusion
Contrast
- Raúl's work has more visible color than mine, and attempts to use a more clear, yet impressionist-like strokes.
- Raul's artwork does not seem to be a complete fusion, and in fact both subjects seem to be presented considerably different than one another.
- The artwork seemingly has a theme regarding the comparison of man and woman, rather than myths in literature.

ACT Questions
1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
My inspiration left a large impact on the thematic aspect of my work. I took inspiration from their semi-fusion like approach in order to develop my theme contrasting mythology.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The author seems to have a comparison between man and woman and their distinct differences. The subjects in their work are similar, with stark contrasts between one another.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I came to a generalization that themes similar to mine are actually a far more common occurrence than I originally believed. This was most likely due to how they often revolve around different subjects and how they compare with one another, rather than the same subject repeatedly.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
My theme for this artwork revolved around the perception of objects or concepts in literature. In this sense, the difference between myths in books rather than our knowledge of reality.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
I made the inference that this theme, while common still has a lot of potential in terms of developing meaningful lessons. Learning to distinguish between something and accept what they are is a common moral theme in life.
